Growth and development of maxillofacial morphology and oral function are closely interrelated. Oral function is comprised of articulation, swallowing, and chewing. Malocclusion may be caused by abnormal functions such as mouth breathing, tongue thrust swallowing, and unilateral chewing and by abnormal postures of oral circumferential muscles such as forward tongue thrust, tongue biting, and low tongue at rest. Forces from unintentional and habitual behaviors constantly acting on the maxillofacial and alveolar regions can cause the bony structures to generally deform, resulting in jaw deformity and malocclusion. Oral function also plays a vital role in maintaining body posture. In this study, clinical observations of oral postures examined maxillary protrusion and open bite, anterior crossbite and facial asymmetry. The unstable forces induced by abnormal posture were correlated with the varieties of malocclusion. Morphology, function, and posture were shown to be closely interrelated and to influence each other.  相似文献

Samples of the first molars of offspring whose dams were fed a diet supplemented with caffeine were examined by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry and electron microprobe analysis. Scanning microscopy of the enamel surface of the caffeine group revealed a consistently rougher surface than in the non-caffeine controls, both before and after acid exposure. X-ray diffraction analysis of the pulverized whole tooth in the caffeine group showed broader diffraction peaks for the lattice plane reflections (202) and (300), indicating smaller crystallites. Pure enamel samples of the caffeine group examined with a Gandolfi X-ray camera also revealed more diffuse diffraction lines than in the non-caffeine controls, further indicating smaller crystallites in the enamel. The calcium and phosphorus contents of the acid-exposed samples in both control and caffeine groups were lower than the non-acid exposed control and caffeine groups by electron microprobe analysis. After exposure to acid, the calcium and phosphorus contents of the outer surface of the enamel in the caffeine group were greatly reduced as compared to that of the non-caffeine controls. Thus various methods consistently indicate that caffeine ingestion during early growth affects the enamel surface of the first molars, resulting in impaired mineralization. Caffeine intake may therefore have a negative effect on amelogenesis and possibly increases susceptibility to dental caries.  相似文献

The number of leucocytes and level of endogenous LTC4 in the pulp tissue were measured by a histological method and radioimmunoassay, respectively. When the mandibular incisor pulp was irritated by drilling a hole in the dentine without using any coolant, the number of polymorphonuclear leucocytes and lymphocytes and the concentration of LTC4 increased to 3.2, 1.9 and 1.8 times their respective levels in normal pulp 6 h after the injury. The total leucocyte number in blood collected from these rats was also increased significantly. In contrast, when the cavities cut in dentine were filled with a zinc oxide-eugenol mixture (powder: liquid 100 mg/25 microliters), the increase in the number of cells was significantly curtailed, and the LTC4 level fell to 50% of that in normal pulp within 1 h after the filling. No decrease in the LTC4 level was observed after filling with a zinc oxide-water mixture, but the level decreased in response to an increase in eugenol content in the zinc oxide-eugenol placed in the cavity. Biosynthesis of [14C]-HETE and HPETE from [14C]-arachidonic acid was inhibited by the addition of 10 microM eugenol to the pulp homogenate. Thus eugenol released from zinc oxide-eugenol inhibited the biosynthesis of lipoxygenase products and the early chemotactic accumulation of leucocytes.  相似文献

We investigated the frequency, site, amount, and direction of facial asymmetry in human adults with mandibular prognathism and examined if these characteristics were associated postnatally with cardinal clinical signs that may indicate a predisposition to facial asymmetry. Two hundred twenty young Japanese adults (69 men and 151 women) who exhibited skeletal Class III malocclusions were selected. The sample was divided into a Postnatal Factor Group and a Nonpostnatal Factor Group. The former group included those who had: (1) received orthodontic treatment using a chin cap; (2) exhibited clinical symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder; (3) reported a history of maxillofacial trauma; or (4) radiographic abnormality of the condyles. Subjects with a deviation of more than 2 mm from the facial midline associated with any of the 4 landmarks (ANS, U1, L1 and Me) were classified as asymmetric and the asymmetry was measured on a postero-anterior (P-A) cephalogram. Radiographic facial asymmetry was found frequently (70%-85%, for Menton), and most obviously in the lower jaw (P < .05). Lateral displacement toward the left side of the face occurred more often than right-sided deviation (P < .001, for Menton). However, the Postnatal Factor Group showed a higher proportion of subjects with lateral deviation toward the right side (P = .0031) and a greater amount (P < .0001) of chin deviation. This was due to the fact that the subjects having TMJ problems as a postnatal factor showed no directional uniqueness in jaw deviation and exhibited a longer distance of deviation.  相似文献

Fluoride has been used to prevent caries in the dentition, but the possible underlying mechanisms of cytotoxicity induction by this compound are still unclear. Since fluoride is known as an inhibitor of glycolytic enzymes, we investigated the possible connection between NaF-induced apoptosis and glycolysis in human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells. NaF-induced apoptotic cell death is characterized by caspase activation, internucleosomal DNA fragmentation, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, and production of apoptotic bodies. Higher activation of caspases-3 and -9, as compared with that of caspase-8, suggested the involvement of an extrinsic pathway. Utilization of glucose was nearly halted by NaF, whereas that of glutamine was rather enhanced. NaF enhanced the expression of Bad protein, but not that of Bcl-2 and Bax proteins, and reduced HIF-1alpha mRNA expression. Analysis of these data suggests a possible link between glycolysis and apoptosis.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate age-related differences in expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) by periodontal ligament (PDL) cells. PDL cells were obtained from Wistar male rats weighing approximately 150 g each in the young group and 350 g each in the old group. PDL cells derived from upper and lower incisors were seeded in 35-mm culture dishes after primary culture. For cell proliferation assays, cells were detached and counted at 1, 3, 5, 7, 11 and 14 days after culture. VEGF mRNA expression was analyzed with TaqMan. The number of cells in both groups increased day by day, but the rate of increase in the young group was higher than that in the old group. VEGF mRNA expression in the young group increased from 3 to 14 days, but in the old group increased only slightly over the same time period. Expression ratios in the young group were higher than those in the old group, and there were significant differences between the young and old groups at 7 and 14 days of culture. In conclusion, the data revealed that PDL cells varied with age, and suggest that in view of such changes in cell proliferation and VEGF mRNA expression, age should be taken into consideration in periodontal treatment.  相似文献

Distraction osteogenesis is widely used for the treatment of craniofacial deformities. In patients with cleft lip and palate, distraction osteogenesis can be employed to repair the alveolar cleft. In this report, we describe the management of three cases of unilateral cleft lip and palate by interdental distraction osteogenesis. Interdental distraction osteogenesis of the maxillary bone was performed to reduce the width of the alveolar cleft in these patients in conjunction with orthodontic treatment. Tooth-tooth type distraction devices were fabricated and delivered at the same time as osteotomy. Distraction was continued until the midline of the dentition coincided with the facial midline, and until the width of the alveolar cleft was reduced to the width of lateral incisor or had closed. One month after distraction was complete, orthodontic treatment with an edgewise appliance was initiated, and neighboring teeth were moved into the newly created bone. A favorable treatment outcome was achieved in all three cases.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The clinical usefulness of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) for haloperidol using blood samples has to be validated. Despite the potential advantage of TDM using saliva, there are few reports comparing drug levels in saliva and blood. Additionally, the relation between haloperidol levels in saliva and brain, the target organ of this drug, has not been reported. We compared haloperidol levels in rat submandibular saliva, plasma and brain. DESIGN: Haloperidol was administered through the femoral vein (0.25 mg/kg). Submandibular saliva was collected 30 min after drug administration. To stimulate secretion, the chorda (parasympathetic) and superior cervical ganglion (sympathetic) were electrically stimulated, and pilocarpine was administered. The concentration of haloperidol in saliva, plasma and brain homogenate was determined. RESULTS: Haloperidol levels in saliva elicited by any stimuli significantly correlated with levels in the brain and plasma. The correlation of haloperidol between saliva and brain was higher than that between plasma and brain. Immunohistochemistry showed that haloperidol was secreted from striated duct cells within the submandibular gland. CONCLUSION: These results suggested that haloperidol was specifically secreted from the striated duct system, and that salivary drug levels reflect the levels in the brain more precisely than plasma.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prognostic significance of the skeletal morphology around the nasal cavity and the alveolar cleft in secondary bone grafting (SBG). DESIGN AND SETTING: Fifty-one alveolar clefts in 41 patients (10 bilateral and 31 unilateral cleft lips and palates) registered in the Tokushima University Dental Hospital were examined in this study. METHOD: Evaluation of the bony bridge after SBG using dental radiographs at 1 year after surgery. The clefts were divided into two groups: group I (54.9%) in which the upper border of the bony bridge was preferably maintained on or above the horizontal reference line (RL) constructed at the level of the root apex of the upper central incisor adjacent to the cleft, and group II (45.1%) in which the bone level was lower than the RL. Presurgical cleft width was determined by the dental radiographs. The cleft/nasal cavity ratio; the value of the cleft width divided by the nasal cavity width on the cleft side, which was analyzed by frontal cephalograms before the SBG; and the cleft/apertura piriformis ratio, the value analyzed by computed tomography, were used. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The age, sex, and eruptive stage of the canine teeth at the time of the SBG showed no significant difference between groups. The presurgical cleft width also showed no significant difference between group I (6.6 +/- 3.1 mm) and group II (7.9 +/- 3.3 mm). The cleft/nasal cavity ratio showed a significant difference between groups I and II (0.42 +/- 0.14, 0.75 +/- 0.25; p < .05). Furthermore, the cleft/apertura piriformis ratio also showed a significant difference between groups I and II (0.32 +/- 0.12, 0.65 +/- 0.26; p < .05). These results suggested that measurements of the skeletal morphology around the nasal cavity and alveolar cleft might aid in predicting the stability of the bony bridge after SBG.  相似文献
